Interviewing Tips: Family Edition

You have a job interview with a potential nanny, Congratulations! Interviews with a nanny can feel a bit overwhelming because you want to learn as much as you can in a relatively short amount of time. 

We put together a list of questions to help guide conversations and learn about potential candidates to find out if they’ll be a fit for your family.

When you retain the 904 Nannies LLC team, you will be given a Nanny Bio and the candidate’s individualized resume with an in depth breakdown of their background. Be sure to review those documents before the interview, as it will likely help you get an idea of who the nanny is before actually meeting with them.

Why/how did you go into childcare?

What are the ages of children you’ve cared for?

What’s your favorite age & why?

What’s your favorite part of nannying?

What’s your least favorite part of nannying?

Do you see yourself doing this in the future?

What do you like to do in your free time?

Do you have any hobbies?

Do you have any allergies?

What’s your communicative style?

Questions About Nannies Experience

What are your strengths & weaknesses?

Are you CPR certified?

All nannies referred by 904 Nannies are CPR/ First Aid Certified

Are you bilingual?

If so, are you comfortable speaking in another language with children?

Why did you leave your last job?

How do you approach misbehavior? 

What was the most challenging experience you’ve had with a child you were taking care of?

Have you ever had to handle an emergency or been witness to a life-threatening situation with a child? 

If yes. What happened & how did you react? If not, what would be your plan of action?

Do you have experience with children who have medical needs or behavioral challenges?

Do you have experience following dietary restrictions and avoiding food allergies?

Do you have experience introducing a baby to solid food?

Do you have experience navigating unusual or difficult family dynamics?

Tell me about the work style of your past employers. 

Ex a casual environment or was there a strict schedule 

What additional duties did you perform in your previous jobs?

Ex. light housework, run errands, etc. 


With those questions, you’ll have the feedback that will help you come to a decision if the candidate could be a good match for you. In some instances, depending on the time frame, it is common to schedule a Working Interview with candidates. For working interviews, you would schedule a time for the nanny to hang out with your kiddos. During these working interviews, it’s suggested that the parents give the nanny/children space to conversate/ bond. Please note, you do want to respect the nanny's time and pay her for the working interview.
