Creating a Professional Nanny Resume

Let’s take a deeper look into creating a childcare focused resume that can help give a true depiction of your experience!

Resumes are a great way to introduce yourself to a potential employer, so having a professional, detailed resume makes sure you’re putting your best foot forward. Taking some extra time when you’re beginning the job search will definitely pay off.

  • Name

  •  Contact info: phone number and professional email

    • 90sbaby@yahoo.com isn’t a necessarily ideal email for applying for an employment position. Having a simple email based on your name is ideal.

  • List of nanny/child related jobs

    • This experience should be the bulk of your resume. Jobs outside of the child care realm can be listed to show consistent work experience, but do not need to have detailed entries.

  • Description of job tasks you have done in nanny/child related jobs

    • Highlight tasks that are applicable to the postings you’re currently applying for and those that will help you stand out from other candidates.

  • Education and Trainings

    • Attended a nanny conference or a national nanny training day? Recently taken a car seat safety class? Let families know.

  • Other related experiences ex. Swim coach, lifeguard, volunteer with children, mentor

  • Portfolio of some of the activities you do with the children you work with.

    • Include some photos of crafts you’ve done, sensory bins you’ve put together, or activities you’ve coordinated

  • Headshots

    • These don’t have to be professionally done. A tasteful photo in good lighting can suffice perfectly. We recommend photos with no filters that can distort your photo’s visibility. Along with avoiding smoldering facial expressions and low cut tops. While you want to convey your true self, you do want to convey that you are a professional as well.

  • References

    • Ideally, these should be people you’ve worked for, mentors, or professional colleagues. Family members are not acceptable professional references, regardless of the relationship.

    • References are recommended to have on a separate page and given to employers that you are actively communicating with. This is to ideally keep your reference’s contact information as protected as possible.

    • When you are applying to positions make sure to notify your references that you are seeking a job and may be contacted.

  • Have a sense of formatting in your resume. Having a well structured resume again can help diversify yourself from other applicants.

    • Google Docs and Canva has a great, free template for building resumes.
